1 in 3 Young People in South West Smoke

Our region's the worst for 16 - 24 year olds smoking in the whole of England.

45 South West teenagers start the habit every day here.

New statistics from NHS South West show over 900, 000 adults still smoke and comes as a new national strategy is being launched to halve this number by 2010.

Teenagers and young people will be specifically targetted by the new measures, including a crack down on cheap illicit cigarettes which it's claimed are often bought by under 18s.

Vending machines with tobacco in will also be removed as well as plans to make all cigarette packets plain.
