Calls for Torbay to Rejoin Devon

Self-rule in Torbay should be scrapped to save money, according to our local MP.

Currently, Torbay is Unitary - meaning it runs all of its own services, including schools & roads.

But Adrian Sanders thinks with so many cutbacks nationwide, it makes sense to re-join the rest of Devon: " you would not have to cut as much if you would cut out the extra chief officers, chief executive and elected mayor"

He continued: "it's a way of avoiding frontline service cuts. There are significant savings that could be made at a time when we are having to count the cost."

Mayor Nick Bye disagrees though, he thinks residents should decide on savings in Torbay: "anyone would rather see the cuts considered at a local level. Back in Devon we never seemed to be that far at the front of the queue."
