Welsh Mum Home On Bail From Caribbean

A Welsh MP has been telling Heart he has serious concerns about the legal system in the Dominican Republic where a mum of two was jailed.

Nicole Reyes from Cardiff was sentenced to 12 years behind bars for manslaughter after her husband died in a crash.

She's now back at home after her family paid more than 60 thousand pounds in bail money.

Nicole's family has led a 2 year campaign to bring her home.

The 39 year old was jailed in 2012 after a road crash where her husband was killed.

She was accused of manslaughter - but always protested her innocence, saying it was a tragic road accident.

Stephen Doughty, MP for Cardiff South and Penarth, has supported the campaign to get Nicole home.

He told Heart he's had concerns about the case against Nicole: "The main thing is that she is back with her family and able to get the medical care that she needs.

"It has been an extremely harrowing process for the family. Nicole denies the allegations and the charges brought against her.

"It's been a difficult time for them all.  At times the legal process has been, quite frankly, farcical. For them to have to deal with that, at a distance, and whilst Nicole has been incarcerated has been incredibly difficult.

"There's a great sense of relief and emotion now amongst the family."

Nicole is now speaking to her legal team about what happens next with her case.
