£3k Reward Over Herts Distraction Burglaries
13 February 2015, 07:14
A reward of up to £3,000 is being offered for information on a gang of distraction burglars who have targeted elderly people in Hertfordshire.
The men have pretended to be from the council or local police and used stories about burst pipes, water leaks, gas explosions and even a lost football to get into the homes of people in their 70s, 80s and 90s and then rob them.
There have been 35 incidents across the East and South East.
Julia Hughes is Regional Manager for Crimestoppers who have put up the money, she said: "This is a despicable series of crimes against elderly and vulnerable people in their own homes.
"We should all feel safe and secure at home and these incidents will have left the victims feeling anxious and scared.
"It's time this gang was brought to justice. If you know who they are, we urge you to report them anonymously to Crimestoppers.
"We don't take personal details and we can't trace calls or information given online.
"We don't want to know who you are, just what you know."
Homeowners are being urged not to open to the door to anyone who is unexpected and unfamiliar. Expected callers should be asked to show identification.
Police are also advising not to keep large amounts of cash at home and not to have work done on their property by anyone who knocks on the door.
If you have any information on these incidents please contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or through our Anonymous Online Form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
