600 Premier Jobs To Go

The company behind Mr Kipling cakes, Hovis bread and Oxo have announced they're cutting 600 jobs.

The cuts at St Albans-based Premier Foods amounts to 5% of their workforce.  The cuts are being made to try and save £40m by 2013.

The debt-laden group was recently given extra time by its banks to get its finances in order.  They want to reinvest the savings in growing their key eight brands, which also include Batchelors, Ambrosia and Bisto.

The company employ around 12,000 people in the UK and Ireland.  They currently have debts of around £850m.

Premier said trading over Christmas had been in line with its expectations but that results for 2011 will be towards the lower end of City hopes.

New chief executive Michael Clarke, who joined the business from American food giant Kraft, said "While decisions to reduce the workforce are always difficult, I'm convinced we are taking the right steps in the long- term interests of the business, employees and our stakeholders.''
