Bigamist Convicted In Hatfield

A man who got married in Hatfield has been revealed as a bigamist, who already had a wife when he signed his second marriage certificate.

48-year-old David Lewis of Swifts Hill, Stroud pleaded guilty to bigamy. He had no previous convictions.

Sally Jackson, defending, said Lewis had been suffering from depression and anxiety and was "easily manipulated." She went on: "He was to gain nothing from the bigamy. It was a marriage of convenience to assist her. At the time he was not thinking properly."

She said he had spoken to a priest and believed his first marriage was not lawful as his birth date had not been properly recorded.

Lewis, who now lives with a new partner, is unable to work because of a back problem. He has set up a charity offering homeless people holistic treatment, said Ms Jackson.

Recorder Jonathan Lee QC told him: "At the time it is clear you were suffering from depression and anxiety. There was some doubt in your mind as to the legitimacy of your first marriage. It is an unusual case."

He passed a 4 month Community Order with an electronically-monitored curfew between 8pm and 8am.
