Body Believed To Be Missing Alan Spray

Police say they believe a body found morning near St Albans is that of missing Alan Spray.

The 73 year old from Hatfield went missing on Saturday July 30th - he was last seen at about 20.10 that evening walking along Verulam Road in St Albans towards the Total garage.

Mr Spray was suffering from Alzheimers.

A number of searches of the area were organised. Police called in specialist dog units and used the force helicopter in the hunt for him. But it was the public support that suprised many.

After Police made an appeal for people to check their sheds and garages, a "Find Alan Spray" group sprang up on Facebook with hundreds of members. The group also organised their own searches in the St Albans area.

Today a Twitter message about Mr Spray was sent around by people as diverse as Stephen Fry and Jessie J.

His family said they were becoming increasingly worried and made a number of appeals for people to keep an eye out for him.

After today's news Mr Spray's wife Barbara issued a statement. "The family and I would like to thank everybody who has supported us – we would like to thank the public, the police and the media. The family and I regret that he was not found alive.”
