Bottle Attacker Jailed

A 19 year old who attacked an innocent man with a broken bottle during a Watford street brawl has been jailed for four years.

The victim - Ben Hosier - has been scarred for life following the attack on 10 December 2010, two weeks before Christmas.

Dan Fernando, who had been involved in the brawl, had picked up a bottle, smashed it and run towards Mr Hosier.

He struck him in the face, causing a 15 centimetre semi-circular deep cut from the middle of his cheek to his top lip, which was cut completely through, St Albans crown court was told.

Mr Hosier needed stitches to close the wounds and has been left with a permanent scar. He said his scar may need further surgery.

Prosecutor Robert Dalling said the fight broke out between two group just before midnight in the town centre.

He said: "Mr Hosier was not involved and had just left a bar with two girls. He was not part of either group. He came past them in close proximity."

Fernando of Jubilee Road, Watford pleaded guilty to wounding Mr Hosier with intent.  He had previous convictions for burglary, shoplifting and cannabis possession.

Nicola Cafferkey, defending, said: "He is genuinely shocked and sickened by his actions. He has taken responsibility for what he has done."

Judge John Plumstead told him: "This was an offence of real seriousness. Mr Hosier will carry Nothing I or you can do can reminder of this night for years to come."
