Emergency services were called to the M1 southbound at junction 5 at around 9pm.
According to officers a red Vauxhall Vectra was travelling south in lane three when it appears to have lost control and collided with the central reservation. The Vectra then crossed the carriageway towards the hard shoulder.
A red Toyota Celica, also travelling south, then lost control as it was travelling in lane three. It is unclear at this stage whether it was in collision with the Vectra at any time. The Celica crossed the carriageway to the nearside and went up the embankment.
A silver BMW travelling in lane two then collided with the Vectra as the Vectra crossed the carriageway from the barrier towards the hard shoulder
One of the rear seat passengers in the Vectra – a 31 year old year woman from Liverpool died as a result of the collision. The driver of the Vectra - a 39 year old man also from Liverpool was taken to Watford General with minor injuries. The other rear seat passenger – a 21 year old woman also from Liverpool suffered minor injuries. The front seat passenger - a 34 year old man was uninjured.
Three men from London were travelling in the BMW. The driver was treated for minor injuries.
The driver of the Toyota left the scene and has not yet been traced.
PC Ian Breacher is investigating the collision and said: "This was a serious collision in appalling weather conditions, in which one lady tragically lost her life. We are appealing to anyone who was travelling on the motorway at this time and who may have witnessed the collisions to get in touch. We are also appealing for the driver of the Toyota Celica to make contact with the police."
The motorway was closed for several hours, with diversions in place to keep congestion to a minimum, and police would like to thank drivers for their cooperation.
