Herts County Council To Expand Primary Places
Hertfordshire County Council has agreed to invest a further £13m in the expansion of primary schools.
The funding was agreed by Cabinet yesterday (Monday 18 May) for 97 extra places across five schools:
" Prae Wood in St Albans (30 extra places);
" William Ransom in Hitchin (22);
" Forres in Hoddesdon (15);
" Roman Way First in Royston (15); and
" Tannery Drift First in Royston (15).
It follows a public consultation on the additional places, which have been created in response to anticipated growth in demand and will be available from September 2016.
Chris Hayward, Cabinet Member for Education, said: "We want all children to have access to a good education so they can reach their full potential. That means ensuring the right number of school places in the right location.
"This is a significant challenge given there are 10,000 more children under the age of four in Hertfordshire today than a decade ago. However, despite the continuing financial pressures we face, we will continue to invest money to ensure that where the county's population grows we build the appropriate infrastructure."
The latest funding comes on top of the £170m already spent over the last four years to provide more than 3,000 additional reception places. A further £76m has been allocated for 2016/17 and 2017/18 to meet the growing need for primary and secondary school places across the county.
