5 March 2012, 16:29

Police are appealing for witnesses and information and offering reassurance following an assault on a teenage girl in Watford on Thursday, February 23.

The incident happened at around 8am in an underpass near to Redheath Close. The 16 year old was approached by the offender who starting talking to her before he pushed her to the floor and assaulted her. It is believed there may have been a sexual motivation to the assault.

The suspect is described a large black man who was in his 50s and had short hair. He was wearing dark clothing and possibly red boots.

Detective Constable Rachel Brown said: “Understandably, the victim has been left extremely shocked by what has happened and it is vitally important we identify this suspect. Our inquiries are on-going but I would ask the community to support us in our investigation. If you recognise the description of the man please call police with information.

“It is believed the suspect was in the area on Monday, February 20 and I would also like to appeal to anyone who was in the area on that day and thinks they saw him. I would particularly like to appeal to a lady who was seen in the area on this day who was pushing a pram and had children with her. If you believe this was you, please call us, you may have seen something which could prove vital to the investigation. If you don’t feel you can contact officers directly then please call Crimestoppers, you don’t have to give your name.  Understandably people living in the area may feel concerned by what has happened. I would like to reassure residents that no similar offences have been reported and officers have increased patrols in the area.”
