Street Snooker launches in WGC
A new game - which has never been played in the UK before - has been launched in Welwyn Garden City.
Around 100 young people took part in the Street Snooker event yesterday (Tuesday). The new game, which was invented by Playinnovation, has been given a permanent pitch at Moneyhole playing fields, after three local councillors provided some Community Chest funding.
Street Snooker combines football and snooker together. It's described as an "outdoor kick wall game" suitable for any age.
To mark the game's launch a Brazilian Skills football workshop was put on by Child UK and street dancers performed a snooker inspired piece.
Guests at the event included World Freestyle Football Champion, John Farnworth, Olympic Badminton medallist, Gail Emms and Hatfield Snooker Professional Alfie Burden.
Ellie Lovelock aged 12 from Welwyn Garden City was the individual winner of the competition with the highest break of the tournament, a whopping break of 51! She said:
“I’m really happy to have been a Street Snooker star today and won the tickets to see England play Ghana next month at Wembley stadium” .
In the team tournament Welwyn Pegasus Football Club won, taking home the Street Snooker Champions trophy to be proudly displayed in their clubs trophy cabinet.
Alfie Burden, who's also a former Arsenal trainee, said:
“I thought it was very good, and I loved the concept of marrying the snooker up with the football, my two big sporting passions in life. There are a lot of young kids out there who don’t know too much about snooker, but love their football. And if this is going to get into school playgrounds and playing fields it can only get youngsters interested and involved, which is good for the growth of the game”.
