Boy Aged 8 From Reddich Dies Of A Heart Attack

Worcestershire NHS Acute Hospital Trust are investigating the death of an 8 year old boy who had a heart attack.

Callum Cartlidge from Redditch couldn't go to his local hospital on Friday because it no longer treats children.

Instead it took paramidics 23 minutes in rush hour traffic to get him to Wocestershire Royal Hospital where he sadly died.

Callum's Aunty set up a funding page to help pay for a memorial garden for his twin brother on Saturday and it has already surpassed its £3,000 total. She wrote

'' We are overwhelmed by your kind donations and support. I would like to thank you all individually if i find out how to do it. We pray today that we will find out why Callum suddenly fell asleep. Once again thank you all xxx ''

Campaigners say its their worst fear come true after warning and protesting over the loss of services at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.

A spokesperson for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust said:

"We can confirm that a patient died on Friday afternoon at Worcestershire Royal Hospital. The trust offers sincere condolences to the family."

"As with any sudden unexpected death in childhood there will be a referral to the coroner, a post mortem and a full external SUDIC investigation as well as our own internal processes for an SI investigation.

"Until our investigations have been completed we cannot comment further."

West Midlands Ambulance Service told is:

"We were called to an address in Redditch at 3.26pm on Friday 3rd March to reports of an 8 year old boy in cardiac arrest.

"A rapid response vehicle arrived five minutes after the call. The paramedic immediately started life support.

"An ambulance arrived shortly afterwards. Together the three members of staff performed advanced life support.

"The ambulance left scene for Worcestershire Royal Hospital at 3.42pm with the crew continuing to treat the patient; it arrived at hospital 23 minutes later, at 4.05pm.

"Having reviewed the case, there is no doubt that the ambulance staff did absolutely everything possible to help the child.

"Our thoughts remain with his family."
