Father and son stabbed in Birmingham

A ``public-spirited'' father and son were stabbed as they tried to protect a group of youths.

18 year old Edward Thompson and his father 53 year old Martin have been seriously injured in the incident in the West Heath area of Birmingham on Saturday night and remained in hospital today.

West Midlands Police described the 18-year-old's condition as critical. His father was said to be stable.

A police spokesman said: ``It appears both had come to the aid of one group of youths being chased by a second group of youths in Alvechurch Road. In trying to intervene, both men sustained stab wounds. The offenders fled the scene.''

Vanessa Eyles, neighbourhood inspector for West Heath, said: ``This is a horrific, unprovoked attack on a public-spirited father and son who were trying to stop trouble.

``Our thoughts are with their family at this time. We would urge anyone with information to come forward.''

Police said emergency services were called to the scene at 9.53pm on Saturday.

A 15-year-old boy from Northfield, Birmingham, has been charged with attempted murder and remanded in custody.

An 18 year old man has also been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and currently being questioned by police.
