A man is suffering life threatening injuries after being hit over the head with a brick during a row in a Birmingham street.

Police say the 40-year-old victim has been placed in an induced coma in hospital after being knocked unconscious in the attack in Stechford at Lunchtime on Saturday.

Officers believe the man was walking to local shops along Stud Lane when he became involved in a row with another man.

Detective Inspector Neil Postins, of West Midlands Police, said: ``This was a vicious attack on a local family man - an outrageous response to a verbal spat in the street.

``It's also a cowardly act to grab whatever he could lay his hands on and use it as a weapon.

``If anyone saw the attack or a man matching the description in that location I'd ask them to contact us immediately.''

The officer added: ``The attacker may well have spoken about the incident to someone.

``If so I'd ask them to do the right thing and get in touch, anonymously if preferred, as we need to get this dangerous man off the streets.''
