Three Officers Appear In Court Over The Death Of Kingsley Burrell In Custody

Three police officers have appeared in court charged with perverting the course of justice after the death of Kingsley Burrell in custody Birmingham.

The three serving police officers are accused of perverting the course of justice and perjury in connection with Kingsley's death while he was under restraint.

West Midlands Police officers Paul Adey, 36, Mark Fannon, 45, and Paul Greenfield, 50, appeared at Birmingham Magistrates' Court for a brief hearing.

They are charged over evidence they gave at last year's inquest into the death of 29-year-old father-of-three Kingsley Burrell.

Wearing formal suits, the men spoke only to confirm their names and that they understood the charges.

Behind them, sat in a packed public gallery, were Mr Burrell's friends and family including his sister Kadisha Brown-Burrell and mother Janet Brown.

Mr Burrell died after suffering a cardiac arrest in 2011 after being detained under the Mental Health Act.

The three men did not need to enter pleas at Monday's hearing, but their solicitor Tim Coolican said the basis of their case would be ``that the accounts given were truthful''.

The Crown Prosecution Service decided earlier this month to charge the officers following a referral from the Independent Police Complaints Commission IPCC.

The men were unconditionally bailed to appear at the city's Crown Court on November 28.
