Police are appealing for witnesses to a fatal collision after the thick fog across the county on Thursday morning.

Police warned motorists to ensure they drove appropriately in the conditions and especially that headlights are being used. A number of collisions were reported across Wiltshire and police, fire and ambulance attended a serious road traffic collision between a lorry and a car on the A3102 between Silver Street, Calne & Sandy Lane.

The collision occurred at 0941hrs on Thursday 13th March 2014 on the A3102 at Mile Elm, and the occupant of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are currently reaching the woman's next of kin.

Officers understand that a woman from the Wiltshire area was driving a silver Ford Fiesta southbound along the A3102 at Melksham when, for reasons unknown at this time, her vehicle was in collision with a white 7.5t Iveco goods vehicle that was travelling in the opposite direction. The female driver of the Fiesta was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who witnessed the collision or have any information that they feel may assist in the enquiry.

In particular, police wish to speak to the driver of a van who had been travelling north and arrived at the scene after the collision but left prior to the arrival of the emergency services. We would urge this driver to get in touch as they may have vital information that would assist the investigation.
