Future of Lyneham

RAF Lyneham's new base commander talks to Heart about the future of the base.

We're being reassured everything's being done to minimise the impact when RAF Lyneham closes at the end of 2012.

Locals are worried about potential vandalism and the site becoming an eyesore.  The base brings in around £25 million a year to the Wiltshire economy.  There are 2,500 staff on site, prompting fears the town on Lyneham will actually become a ghost town once the base shuts for good.

The majority of RAF personnel will move to Brize Norton, with others posted to other bases around the country. It's unclear what will happen to civilian staff.  We have been told that all flights will be stopped at the end of 2011.
