Swindon's Tented Market struggling

Struggling stall holders at Swindon's tented market are calling for cheaper car parking in the town centre. Many of the 20 traders on site say they're struggling to make £4 a day let alone a profit.

Ash Mistry who runs Egg-E-Licious in the market says they can't compete with out of town shopping centres where it's free to park.

The recent 4 month trail in the run up to Christmas and over New Year, saw car a 4 hour stay in one of Swindon Council's car park cost only 2 pounds. That's now gone back up to 4 pound 80. But councillors say they can't continue to fund the scheme, as they simply don't have the money for it.

The council also tell us they can’t simply signpost the tented market because there are dozens of businesses in the town centre, all of which could make a potential case for having their own signposts.

But Jade from the Ideal Gift Shop says it's not just about getting people in to the market, it's also about keeping them there.

The market is open Monday to Saturday from 9.30am to 5pm.
