We're delighted to be working with Swindon Town for the 2016/17 which includes something huge!
And we're off...
5th March 2012
This morning saw the beginning of our massive Have A Heart Appeal week. It also means we’re just a couple of days away from the scariest challenge of my life...
On Wednesday I will be donning a bus driver’s hat and getting behind the wheel of a double decker, which I’ll be driving around Castle Coombe race track.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not generally a wimp. I’ve done a bungee jump before. I’ve even gone scuba diving with sharks. I’ve got on stage for a stand-up comedy gig and I’ve read the news in my bra outside a shopping centre in the middle of Reading.
But this challenge is worse than all those put together.
I’m not the best driver, you see. In fact, I would go so far as to say I’m pretty rubbish. When it comes to parking, if I can’t find three empty spaces in the car park next to each other, I have to hand the car to my husband to deal with. I’ve never driven anything bigger than the car I currently own (don’t ask me what model it is, all I know is that it’s little and green). I screamed out loud during my driving test and was nearly sick on the examiner.
Driving scares me.
Jez hasn’t been much help. He’s going to be sitting on the top deck of the bus as I attempt to beat the current record for fastest bus to drive round the race track. He’s a bit scared. But that’s making me even more terrified.
So far, most of the support has come from you lovely lot. On the Heart Wiltshire Facebook page we’ve some great messages. Tracey even left us a little poem…
The thing keeping me going as we get nearer Challenge Day is remembering why we’re doing it. This year Have A Heart is supporting Childline. We want to pay for more counselors to answer the phones, so a child in need should never be left waiting, with their call going unanswered.
Stagecoach have kindly got involved and pledged to do a job swap. The boss at Stagecoach is coming in and doing a little stint on the radio, while I go off and drive one of his buses – that’s if his lovely staff can raise £400 anyway!
So wish me luck – and if you know anyone who works at Stagecoach don’t forget to remind them to get involved and donate some cash to the appeal, or the bus drive might just not happen….
