Is this the perfect man?!

2nd July: Jez thinks he has the secret to a happy marriage. Seriously.

According to Jez, the perfect husband has to be good at DIY.

He made this statement after admitting that he, on reflection, is a bit rubbish with his tools. Much to his wife's disappointment he often has to call her for help negotiating instructions. And when it comes to having the right drill or screwdriver - or any other basic equipment - he often falls short.

Jez also admitted that he goes into a jealous rage when he overhears mums at the school gate boasting of their husband's DIY achievements. It makes him feel outmanned, apparently.

Now, I have to say I'm not entirely sure about Jez's theory. I mean, it's all a bit 1950s isn't it? Do people actually think this stuff still? Isn't a good marriage all about team work, rather than a man doing one thing and a woman doing another?

Actually, when I think about it, most of the DIY jobs in my own house tend to fall to my husband. Maybe it's because he doesn't know how to use the washing machine and I often do most of the cooking, or maybe it's that I'm often not tall enough or strong enough to do the stuff that needs to be done. But - and this goes against all my Girl Power tendencies - I do feel an extra surge of love for my husband when he's successfully put up a shelf. Is that bad?

I'm not the only one. And, I'm pleased to say, I'm not the only one who struggles to get jobs done around the house. "My husband has put the toilet roll holder on the wall 5 times," says Emma. "Five times and it still falls down. He says it's the wall's fault." Sarah also got in touch, "I do all the DIY jobs myself, because it's the only way I can guarantee they'll be done properly."

Oh dear.

So does a man need to be good at DIY to be a good husband? Well, this man thinks so. Forget David Beckham, George Clooney or Brad Pitt - it seems the perfect husband material is Mr Tommy Walsh!
