Jobs to go at food manufacturer in Wirral

218 jobs look set to go after Tulip Ltd announced that it has commenced consultation on a proposal to cease production at Tranfoods Ltd’s Abbey Street site in Birkenhead on the Wirral.

Since acquiring the business in 2011, Tulip has been working to try and address a number of operational and technical issues at the loss making site.

Peter Judge, Chief Operating Officer Tulip Ltd said:

'I do appreciate that today’s announcement will come as a massive blow to everyone who has worked so hard to try and make the business a success, however the harsh reality is that there are a number of very serious operational and technical issues at the Tranfoods site and it would require significant investment to bring the Abbey Street facility up to the manufacturing standards of the rest of the Tulip Group.

'Given the current over capacity in the market and the prevailing economic climate we do not believe there is a viable alternative other than the proposed closure of the site.

'Our priority now will be to consult with affected employees and their representatives to consider any alternatives and if there are none to find ways in which to lessen the impact of the proposed closure and should it prove necessary, support them in looking for alternative employment.'
