Mums call for hospital ward to stay

A group of mums are calling on hospital managers not to move a children's hospital ward in North Wales 45 minutes away from its current location.

The Health Board there could move the service from Wrexham's Maelor hospital to Glan Clywd hospital as they review all their services.

Clare Brown's set up a Facebook group calling to keep the ward open after her 8 year old daughter Lauren died from cancer there earlier this year.

She said:

"She lived and died on that ward.

"She lived on that ward because they made her better - they gave her quality of life.

"She also passed away on that ward because that is where she wanted to be."

Well the Maelor Hospital have told Heart that discussions are still in the very early stages.

Dr Brendan Harrington Consultant Paediatrician said:

"We face real challenges in relation to recruiting and training skilled doctors, providing obstetricians twenty-four hours a day in all hospitals whilst trying to reduce financial costs.

"This position is likely to get worse unless we change our approach.

"It is crucial that we engage with all stakeholders at a time of potential change in the provision of healthcare in North Wales.

"Services are currently organised based on the boundaries of the former NHS organisations and there is a need to work more
flexibly and efficiently to ensure quality and safety and the best possible services for the people of North Wales."
