A woman has been left with what police have called ''possible life threatening head injuries'', after a collision with a force car responding to an emergency in Bristol city centre.
Police say it happened on Saturday night around 10pm, when the vehicle was being driven to the Stokes Croft area to respond to reports of a man making threats with a knife.
The collision occurred at the junction of Gloucester Road and Ninetree Hill and the victim, whose age has not yet been given, was taken to Southmead Hospital. The road was closed for investigators.
The force says the incident has been referred to its professional standards department and the police watchdog, the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
Officers are keen to speak to anyone who saw what happened and who might have information that could help the investigation.
Police say they have also arrested a man on suspicion of assault and have seized a knife in relation to the initial call-out.
