Cambridge University has confirmed that one of its graduates boarded the Malaysia Airlines plane missing in south Asia.
Doctor Yuchen Li, who studied at Churchill College, was among 239 people on the aircraft which vanished on Friday.
Churchill College this morning tweeted: "Heartbreaking news this morning - Yuchen Li (alum) was on the missing Malaysian flight our thoughts are with Mingfei Ma, his friends & family."
Mr Li reportedly celebrated getting married last month, and is understood to have studied a PHD in Engineering at Churchill.
The flight to Beijing vanished two hours after taking off from Kuala Lumpur.
Officials say despite an extensive search and a number of reported sightings, there is still no confirmed debris from the plane.
Investigators have since widened their search area, after a yellow object seen floating in the South China Sea was determined not to be a life raft.
Oil slicks seen from the air have also been ruled out as being from the aircraft.
