An investigation has started to determine the cause of a fire that badly damaged a pub near Huntingdon.

Firefighters were called to The Three Horseshoes, just off the B1040, in Abbots Ripton yesterday afternoon at 4pm.

Crews arrived at the scene to discover the thatched roof of the building was well alight.

A total of five fire crews, from Huntingdon, Sawtry, St Neots and Papworth, as well as a turntable ladder were sent to deal with the fire.

Firefighters had the fire under control by 10:20pm last night.

Nobody was hurt in the fire.

Dave Warren, from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "This was quite an intense fire in the roof.

When crews arrived, the fire was breaking through the thatch in the roof.

Thatch is a very difficult material to take off of the roof because it is very heavy, tightly interwoven and frequently covered with a mesh of chicken wire to keep it in place."
