A man from Crawley has been arrested after the bomb squad was called in over the discovery of "suspicious materials" found in a flat in Kent.

Police evacuated three streets in Ramsgate, Kent, on Monday while the reports were investigated.

Charlotte Court, Harbour Street, York Street and Queen Street were closed off as a precaution shortly before 3.30pm and a Ministry of Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called to the scene to inspect the items.

A leisure centre was set up as an emergency shelter for residents evacuated from their homes.

A 65-year-old man was arrested in Crawley, West Sussex, on suspicion of making or knowingly having control of explosives in suspicious circumstances and remains in custody, Kent Police said on Tuesday.

It is understood the incident is not thought to be terrorism-related.

The roads were re-opened at around 4.20am and residents were allowed back into their homes after the bomb squad assessment found there was no risk to the public, a force spokesman said.
