Man Dies After Hit And Run At A Crossing

A man has died after being hit by a car as he and his wife used a pedestrian crossing in Poole.

It happened at 1.50am on Saturday 24th December. The couple had just come out of a nearby pub and had pushed the button at a pedestrian crossing on Poole Road, waiting for the light to show green and let them cross. When it did, they were about halfway across the road when a blue nissan micra hit the man and drove off.

The 46 year old was taken to Poole Hospital with serious head injuries, but died soon afterwards. His 47 year old wife wasn't hurt in the collision.

Meanwhile later that morning, two people in another car spotted the vehicle and grew suspicious about the damage to its front. They followed it and detained the man until police could arrive.

Officers now questioning a 40 year old from Poole on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a road traffic collision.

Witnesses or anyone with any information should call Dorset Police on 101 or 01202 22 22 22 and quote message 30 of the 24th December.
