Walk To School Week

Children and parents across Bournemouth are being encouraged to walk to school this week (Monday 16 May 2011) as part of the national campaign 'Walk to School'.

Over the last 20 years the proportion of children travelling to school by car has almost doubled with the school run accounting for 1 in 5 cars on the road in urban areas.

Ian Selby, Sustainable Travel Officer for Bournemouth Council, said;

“During Walk to School Week we are asking parents and children to give it a go and see how enjoyable walking can be. Walking is key to fighting childhood obesity, but it can also be beneficial to children in other ways, helping them learn vital road safety skills, to interact with their local environment and to become ‘streetwise’ and develop independence.”
