Suffolk Constabulary are working with the British Transport Police to start an investigation into the death of a young woman on the railway line between Brandon and Santon Downham on Monday night.

At around 8.30pm Suffolk Constabulary received a call concerning a domestic incident in the Brandon area, and was making active inquiries when the police were called around 9:30pm by a train driver who told them the train had hit a person nearby to Santon Downham.

It's thought the woman who died is 25 years old and the police are treating the death as unexplained.

A short while after the collision Suffolk Police arrested a 45 year old man on suspicion of false imprisonment as officers investigate the circumstances of what happened just before her death.

He is currently in custody at Bury St. Edmunds police station where he will be interviewed by police.

National Express East Anglia ran replacement transport between Brandon and Thetford and Brandon and Cambridge, and East Midlands trains between Norwich and Ely were delayed by up to one hour.

The railway lines were handed back to Network Rail at 5.02am. Police want to speak to anyone who may have seen a woman in distress in the forest around Santon Downham last night prior to 9.30pm. Calls should be made to West Suffolk CID on 01473 613500.
