A man is starting a 10 year jail term after pleading guilty to grievous bodily harm following a serious assault in Ipswich.

51 year old Lianjun Sun of Cromer Road, Ipswich appeared at Ipswich Crown Court to hear his sentencing following the incident which happened in November 2013.

Police were called by the ambulance service at around 3.20pm on Friday 1 November 2013, to an address in Garrick Way, Ipswich, where a woman had been found unconscious with serious neck injuries.

The 50 year old victim was taken to Ipswich Hospital to receive treatment for what were considered life threatening injuries.

Officers at the scene carried out a search of the address and surrounding area and took statements from witnesses nearby.

Their enquiries took them to an address in Cromer Road, Ipswich where Lianjun Sun was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder the same afternoon. He was taken to the Martlesham Police Investigation Centre and later charged with the offence of attempted murder on Monday 4 November.

A 55 year old man was also arrested near the scene, but was eliminated from the investigation and later released with no further action.

Lianjun Sun entered a not guilty plea to the charge at a hearing in January 2014 and later pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm.

The court heard that Lianjun Sun and his victim had a disagreement at the takeaway food premises where they both worked, which resulted in the victim being attacked by him, with what was believed to be a large knife of meat cleaver.
A search of the surrounding area found a meat cleaver within undergrowth behind the parade of shops in Garrick Way.

A search of Lianjun Sun’s home address in Cromer Road found a top with blood stains on it and three blood stained tissues.

The victim sustained deep laceration wounds around her neck.

On Thursday 18 July Lianjun Sun was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

Speaking after sentencing Detective Sergeant Carl Dye said: "This was a truly horrific and brutal attack on the victim, one I am sure will take her many years to get over both psychologically and physically.  I am encouraged by the sentenced imposed on Lianjun Sun and I would like to thank those who not only came to the assistance of the victim on the day but also assisted us throughout the investigation which has enabled justice to be done.”
