An elderly woman found dead at a house was sexually assaulted and murdered, police have revealed.
A post-mortem examination revealed that the woman, whose body was discovered at a property in Norwich on Sunday night, died as a result of a "sustained assault'', Norfolk Police said.
A man in his 20s is being questioned on suspicion of murder in Wymondham after police obtained a warrant for more time to question him, from local magistrates.
A police spokesman said the body of the woman, who has yet to be identified, was discovered in The Avenues, Norwich, at about 5.30pm yesterday.
He added: "Officers had been attending the address in connection with another matter which police had been dealing with earlier in the day. Shortly after 10am police were called to Christchurch Road over concerns for the safety of a man. The man was detained and taken to hospital for treatment.
"The man, aged in his 20s, was later arrested on suspicion of murder and taken into custody at Wymondham Police Investigation Centre where he remains.''
