Basildon: Man Jailed For Rape

13 September 2012, 17:30

A man has been jailed for six years for raping a woman as she walked home from a night out in Basildon.

23 year old Curtis Pizzey of Barnard Close, Basildon had previously pleaded guilty to raping the 18-year-old woman in Cranes Farm Road near Festival Leisure Park on May 14, 2012.

The woman had been walking through an underpass in the early hours when she was grabbed by Pizzey, dragged up a grass bank and sexually assaulted.

Pizzey was sentenced to six years imprisonment at Basildon Crown Court and will be on the sex offenders' register for life.

Senior Investigating Officer, DCI Simon Werrett said: "Curtis Pizzey raped an innocent, vulnerable young woman, who had been enjoying an evening out with friends at Festival Leisure Park.

"Today he starts a prison sentence which reflects that act. He has shown remorse and pleaded guilty so his victim did not have to go through the trauma of giving evidence. However, he did attack her, he deserves to be behind bars and this will ensure that women are free to go out and enjoy themselves without being attacked by this man.

"The victim has shown great courage in reporting this offence to the police and I hope that after today she has closure and can start moving on with her life again."
