More than 40 firefighters have spent the night fighting a thatched roof fire near Saffron Walden.
Nine crews were called to Finchingfield Road in Great Sampford at around 7.30pm yesterday.
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said: "On arrival the incident commander reported that the roof was 10% alight. Crews were using one hose reel jet to fight the fire.
"At 20:15hrs the incident commander reported that the fire had now spread to engulf around 30% of the roof.
"Firefighters in breathing apparatus were using tools to strip away the roof and hose reel jets to fight the fire.
"A salvage operation - in which firefighters recover belongings and furniture from the house before it is damaged - was also taking place.
"The electricity board has been called in and it is likely safety concerns mean they will have to shut power off to the entire street while the fire is being fought".
