The father of a University of Essex student has paid tribute after his son's death in Colchester.

Tim Jarvis was found unconscious at the bottom of stairs at campus accommodation last week (Tuesday 11 October).

The 18-year-old was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

His father Peter Jarvis said: "Tim was a relaxed and friendly character who was excited by the prospect of university life and the possibility of a study year in the US.

His family is distraught at his loss and request that their privacy be respected at this difficult time."

The university has released the following statement: "A first-year student from the Department of Mathematical Sciences has died as a result of injuries sustained after falling down the stairs in his Colchester Campus accommodation last week.

"The University would like to offer its condolences to his family and will be offering support to those on campus who have been directly affected.

"The University will be assisting the Coroner's Office with its inquiries into this accident."
