A man has been left with a serious arm injury after he was hit with a machete in Southend.
It is believed there was a disturbance between a group of people in Victoria Road in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Police were called by the East of England Ambulance Service at around 12.10am with reports that a man in his 20s had been attacked.
The injury is not believed to be life threatening.
Four men are in custody.
A silver VW Golf seen near the location of the incident has been seized by officers.
DI Chris Rose said: “This incident is likely to have drawn some attention from residents and we would like to highlight that no wider or further risk is posed to the public.
“This is believed to be a targeted attack, although the motive remains unclear.
“Please contact my team of detectives if you have information which could help us progress our enquiries.”
The men, who are aged 22, 28, 29, 37, have been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.
