A man has suffered serious injuries to his head, face and shoulder after being attacked with a knife at Grays railway station.
He was hit in the face and slashed with what is thought to have been a small knife after an argument with a group of four men shortly before 8.10pm on Monday.
The man, who is in his 40s, is now in a stable condition in hospital.
DS Phil Moulsher from Grays CID said: "We believe the incident happened on a piece of land which is a grassy area between the church and railway station.
"It leads from the alleyway which is just off Station Approach.
"We have limited details about the group of men but one is believed to have had a small, black dog with him.
"We also know that a group of young black men stepped in and tried to intervene and we would really like to speak to them".
