Men Arrested on Suspicion of Drugs and Weapons Offences

Five men have been arrested on suspicion of drugs and weapons offences.

Police were called at 12.45am today, Wednesday, October 24, with reports of men acting suspiciously at a house in Wheatley Avenue, Braintree.

When officers attended, they found evidence of a cannabis cultivation at the address.

The suspects had left in a Ford Fiesta, which was then linked to a Mini Cooper.

Police stopped the Mini in Great Leighs and found items including an axe inside.

The occupants, a 28-year-old man from Maldon and a 26-year-old man from Southend, were arrested on suspicion of cultivating cannabis, possession of an offensive weapon and going equipped for stealing.

The Fiesta failed to stop for police, before crashing on Chelmer Valley Bridge in Chelmsford. What appeared to be a firearm was found inside the car.

The occupants ran off and into the area of Fifth Avenue.

While we were searching the area, we arrested three men.

An 18-year-old man from Chelmsford was arrested on suspicion of possession of firearms offences and breaching bail conditions.

A 24-year-old man from Chelmsford was arrested on suspicion of possession of firearms offences and possession of drugs.

A 21-year-old man from Chelmsford was arrested on suspicion of possession of firearms offences.

All five remain in custody for questioning.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident in Wheatley Avenue and the collision on Chelmer Valley Bridge.

We also received reports of a group of men attempting to steal a car in Petersfield, Chelmsford, which may be linked, and are appealing for witnesses who saw anyone acting suspiciously in that area.
