A 50 year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was found fatally injured at an address in Pitsea.

Police were called to reports of a "disturbance" on Appleford Court just after 12.30am today, which was followed by a report of a man unconscious in a communal stair well.

Essex Police said: "Officers initially gave first aid before paramedics took over but the man was sadly declared dead at the scene.

"Following subsequent enquiries the 50-year-old suspect was arrested in Rectory Road shortly after 1am. He was initially detained on suspicion of assault before being further arrested for murder.

"He has been taken to Basildon Police Station where he currently remains for questioning.

"The scene of the death has been cordoned off and a forensic examination and house to house enquiries by officers are currently continuing.

"The deceased man has not been formally identified but he is believed to be in his mid 20s to mid 30s.

"A second man is reported to have left the scene and is currently being sought by police.

"He is described as white, 5ft 5in tall, in his mid 30s with short dark hair. He was wearing dark clothing".
