Five men have been arrested after shots were fired at unarmed police officers who chased a man in Basildon.
Police were called to reports of a number of men with firearms in the Arne Court area at around 1.20am yesterday.
Essex Police said: "Officers attended the location where a suspect made off. A foot chase ensued before what is believed to be a firearm, was discharged at officers. No one was injured.
"Three suspects have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and possessing a firearm and a further two suspects have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery.
"Enquiries continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and road closures are in place in Vaughan Williams Road and Holst Avenue in Laindon.
"Police are appealing for anyone in and around the local area, who has information relating to this incident, to contact them. Officers also ask anyone who has local CCTV to call 101."
