A 26 year-old man has been arrested over a fatal car crash in Basildon that has left two pedestrians dead.
Emergency services were called to Roundacre at around 8.45pm yesterday (Tuesday, 22 March).
The man arrested is being questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Essex Police said: "A man, believed to be in his mid 30s, and a woman, believed to be in her late 30s, were both treated at the scene by officers and paramedics.
"The woman was sadly declared deceased at the scene and the man was taken to hospital where he was also sadly declared deceased.
"Following enquiries at the scene the driver of a Volkswagen Passat, a 26-year-old man from Laindon, was arrested and taken to Basildon Police Station for questioning.
"The road was closed until 2.25am today while Emergency Services dealt with the scene and police carried out initial investigations".
