Devon's Tiny Red Ray of Hope

Wild red squirrels have been born in Devon for the first time in over fifty years.

Two tiny baby red squirrels have been spotted in a dray inside an open enclosure at Escot near Ottery St Mary.

The enclosure is home to two breeding pairs of red squirrels.  It's one of only two walk-through enclosures open to the public in the UK.

Security is tight, with steel fencing, rimmed with electric fencing, to keep the destructive grey squirrels out.

Millions of grey squirrels have killed off the native red and it's expected the red squirrel will be extinct within the next 20 or 30 years unless more is done to protect them.
