More Parents Prosecuted Over Truancy

248 parents in Devon were prosecuted last year because their child missed too much school.

Education spokesperson for Devon County Council David Hutchings, says it has to be tough on truancy, "it is very important they are in school every day to learn what they need to learn to get their exams and go on and get a good career, so we do prosecute where there is willful truancy."

However the issue is not being treated as too much of a problem here as there are up to 96,000 children in our schools here.

Attendance levels have also seen a rise alongside the increase in prosecutions.
