Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service continued to work hard through the night tackling a deep-seated fire in a large pile of recycled wood at ABC Demolitions, Mill Road, Colmworth that caught alight early yesterday afternoon.
Fire Service presence has been reduced to three fire appliances from the six that were being used at the height of the fire and the High Volume Pump, provided by Cambridgeshire Fire Service, is still in use to supply water to the incident.
Firefighters are continuing to monitor the fire using thermal imaging cameras to ensure that any radiant heat from it does not affect adjacent buildings. They are currently using covering jets to both dampen the fire and to protect nearby properties. Those in properties immediately next to the site have been evacuated.
Because of the nature of the fire and the size of the wood pile it is likely this will be a protracted incident that could last for days.
A fire investigation into the cause of the fire will take place once it has been extinguished.
