A man who stole a toy robot and threatened staff with a screwdriver in Luton has been jailed.
Gary Dean, 48, ran off from the Toy R Us store in Luton and then promptly tripped over and was detained.
Dean, a prolific petty thief who has been stealing property for years to fund his drug habit, was already serving a community order for thieving when he went into the toy store on the afternoon of January23 this year.
He pleaded guilty to theft and common assault.
George Heimler prosecuting said Dean of Grove Road in Luton had gone into the store in Gypsy Lane in the town and was seen to put the toy robot in an empty Tesco carrier bag.
He walked past the tills and outside the store and it was then as staff tried to detain him that he picked up a screw driver on the ground and made threats.
The court was told that following his arrest it was discovered he had a long list of previous offences for thieving.
Judge David Farrell QC jailed Dean for a total of 54 weeks.
