Police are appealing for witnesses following a single vehicle road traffic collision in which the driver died.
Officers were called at 1.20pm on New Year's Day after a white VW Polo was spotted in a small tributary leading to the River Ouse near the B1043 Barford Road, Tempsford, 340 metres north of its junction with the A1 south bound.
It is believed the vehicle entered the water earlier that day, possibly around 3am, and police are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen it in the area prior to the incident. Those out and about celebrating the New Year may recall seeing something that could assist.
The male driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene and the road was closed until 3.56pm for a full collision investigation and vehicle recovery. The coroner has been informed and an inquest will open in due course, after which the driver will be formally named.
Anyone with information should telephone PC David Clarke of the Collision Investigation Unit on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
