Berrywood Hospital

The first patients have received treatment at a new centre for chronic/severe depression at the Berrywood Hospital site in Northampton.

The cutting edge "rTMS" treatment uses magnetic stimulation of the brain, and has been offered by NHFT since 2015.

The Trust has now created a new bespoke facility where patients can receive the non-invasive, pain free, drug free treatment.

The centre has four treatment rooms allowing the Trust to treat up to 10 patients a day.

rTMS treatment is currently used in cases of treatment resistant depression where patients have been prescribed four or more different types of medication with no improvement in symptoms.

The treatment is given for an hour a day, 5 days a week for up to 6 weeks and current studies by NHFT indicate a complete remission rate of 40% in patients under the age of 60.

There's also a partnership with the University of Northampton tol help further research into the effectiveness of the treatment and how else it could be used to help people suffering mental health conditions.
