A burglar was so desperate to get away from cops, that he ran across all six lanes of the M25 motorway.
But Masood Ahmed hadn't reckoned on the tenacity of the police officers chasing him.
They did the same and soon caught him and an accomplice
Today Ahmed and Michael Bird found justice caught up with them too when they were jailed.
At St Albans crown court they appeared for sentence for the burglary in Avian Avenue, Frogmore, St Albans, and theft. Bird alone pleaded guilty to going equipped for theft and criminal damage and Ahmed admitted possessing a small amout of cannabis.
The court was told that in the break-in in the early hours of March 24 this year, the pair took the car keys to a brand new Mercedes worth £25,000, which they drove away in.
They parked up a short while later in Hadleigh Close, Shenley, but were forced to run off on foot when police suddenly turned up having been alerted by a woman who was suspicious about the pair.
Bird ran off through gardens and was soon caught.
Ahmed then ran across the nearby M25 and was caught on the other side by officers who had followed him.
Ahmed, of Five Acres, Northgate, Crawley, West Sussex, was jailed for 27 months. Bird of Lea Hall Gardens, Lea Hall Road, Waltham Forest, London was jailed for 20 months.
The judge praised the persistence and professionalism of the police.
"So determined were you to make your escape it involved crossing the M25."
The eagle eyed women who had called the police about the pair was awarded £250.
