On this date in 1986 the Prime Minister Margret Thatcher opened the completed M25 motorway. Most of us have spent some time stuck on the Britain's busiest motorway but despite being renowned for congestion is has been hailed a success.
Roads Minister and Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning was at the Highways Agency Regional Control Centre at South Mimms yesterday. He spoke about the benefits of London's orbital route and about bringing it into the twenty-first century.
Penning says that the road has not only revolutionised the way we travel around the county but thinks it has also helped the economy to grow.
A number of changes have been made to the road since it was completed. The 117 miles of motorway has had to develop as it is used by up to 200,000 vehicles everyday. Penning says that 25 years ago they had no idea it would be used by this many people: "Parts of this motorway today will take around 200.000 vehicles no one could have dreamt that would happen at the time and that’s why she needs to evolve as we go forward and we are doing that and using some modern technology that would never have been dreamt about 25 years ago"
Also celebrating the roads 25th birthday is Stewart Evans, Stewart was 15 years old when the road opened but so passionate about civil engineering he wrote to Thatcher asking if he could come along to the opening. To his surprise, his request was accepted. He now works for the highways Agency and deals with the day -to-day running of the M25. At the moment work is being carried out to widen carriageways and improve safety of the hard shoulder. Mike Penning says there are also plans to reduce hold-ups at the Dartford Crossing by introducing a system like the London congestion charge where there are no barriers.
