Heart's Mini for Hospice
Heart Breakfast's Daniel Fox has handed over a brand new Mini to Iain Rennie Grove House Hospice Care (IRGH), thanks to your generosity and our charity Have a Heart.
Heart has funded the Mini to help hospice at home nurses provide care and support to seriously ill children and their families in their own homes.
IRGH Director of Nursing Sue Varvel explains: "Our six children's nurses (known as ‘Pepper nurses’ because they are funded by the Pepper Foundation) provide long-term care for local children and their families coping with life-limiting illness.
"This team will use our new Mini during the day to visit our paediatric patients. During the evening and throughout the night, the Mini will be in use by our overnight team, who respond to any phone-calls from patients or carers with telephone support or visits as required.
"Couldn't have come at a better time"
"The donation of this Mini, thanks to Heart and their generous listeners, couldn't have come at a better time. We had been trying to source a car for our newly-formed overnight team and were struggling to find the most cost-effective solution. Our nurses have always used their own vehicles for making visits, but now many of them will be able to make use of this fantastic gift, which will save the charity hundreds of pounds in reimbursed mileage expenses."
Heart Breakfast presenter Daniel Fox officially handed over the keys of the Mini to Sue and the head of the Pepper Children’s nursing team Sonya O’Leary on Thursday 6th October. Hear what happened...
How you raised the money
The donation follows the nationwide Have a Heart Appeal earlier this year which raised over £330,000 for Children’s Hospices UK. The 2011 Appeal included a star-studded fundraising extravaganza featuring a whole host of celebrities and guests including chart-toppers JLS and Westlife, The X Factor’s Matt Cardle, Olly Murs.
Heart Breakfast presenter Daniel Fox said: "The work that IRGH and the Pepper Children’s Nurses carry out across Herts and Bucks is truly inspiring and we are delighted to support them. We’d like to thank all our Heart listeners for their amazing generosity with our Have a Heart Appeal. By enabling us to provide the Mini, their donations will make a real difference to improve the lives of seriously ill patients and their families in our local area."
